Week 2 - Material Properties : Steel

STEEL

What is the process of making the material:The most modern and commonly used method is with and oxygen furnace. Very pure oxygen blows though melted iron and lowers the levels of impurities. Chemicals are also added to clean up sulfur and phosphorus.

How long will the material last: Depending on the environment and the condition the material can last for 100 of years although if it is exposed to corrosive elements it would not last long

What makes the material corrode: If steel is not maintained it can rust by just being exposed to mosture and salt in the air. Maintanace is a Necessity to prevent corrosion.

What are the material's structural pros and cons:
PROS: Strong, easily shaped before cooling down
CONS: needs care and maintenance

What is the material typically used for: Steel is typically used for beams of buildings. Steel can be shaped into other forms such as bracing on the wall.

What are the material's environmental impacts:
Steel is made by big factories that emits CO2. This is very harmful to the environment causes pollution.
